Federal inmate indicted for possessing weapon at Schuylkill facility

A federal grand jury has indicted Sheldon Mays, 25, of New Jersey, for possession of a weapon while incarcerated at the Schuylkill Federal Correctional Facility. The indictment alleges that on July 27, 2024, Mays possessed a sharpened plastic weapon with a cloth handle while he was an inmate.

Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus stated, "The indictment alleges that on July 27, 2024, Mays, an inmate at the Schuylkill Federal Correctional Facility, possessed a sharpened plastic weapon with a cloth handle."

The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Assistant United States Attorney Sarah R. Lloyd is prosecuting.

If convicted under federal law for this offense, Mays faces up to five years in prison as well as supervised release and a fine. Sentencing will be determined by a judge who will consider federal statutes and sentencing guidelines.

Officials emphasized that indictments are only allegations and that all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
