Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a meeting with Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Cho Hyun to discuss the ongoing partnership between the United States and South Korea. According to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, both officials emphasized the longstanding strength of the U.S.-ROK Alliance, describing it as "the linchpin of peace, security, and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and across the Indo-Pacific for over seven decades."
During their talks, Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Cho explored ways to further develop the alliance through a forward-looking agenda. This includes strengthening deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region, increasing collective burden sharing, supporting American manufacturing revitalization, and addressing fairness and reciprocity in trade relations. The two leaders also underscored the significance of trilateral cooperation among the United States, Japan, and South Korea.
The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by both countries to adapt their alliance to new regional challenges while maintaining strong diplomatic ties.
