A Honduran national residing illegally in Canton, Texas, has been indicted for unlawfully returning to the United States, according to a statement from Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs of the Eastern District of Texas.
Jefferson Funes-Mejia, 32, was charged by a federal grand jury with illegal reentry after being previously deported. The indictment states that Funes-Mejia was found in the Eastern District of Texas on April 16, 2025.
“This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN),” said Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.
If convicted, Funes-Mejia could face up to ten years in federal prison followed by deportation.
The investigation is being led by Homeland Security Investigations and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble.
Authorities emphasized that an indictment does not constitute evidence of guilt; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
