Korriek Akinola, 24, of Washington, D.C., has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed for his involvement in a 2023 drive-by shooting that killed Joshua White. The plea was entered on August 18, 2025, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Sentencing is set for October 24, 2025, before Judge Neal Kravitz.
According to court documents, on June 6, 2023, Akinola and another individual were in a white Infiniti SUV near the Shell gas station at 4700 South Capitol Street SE. They saw Joshua White riding a Veo bike in the parking lot. The two left and switched vehicles to a stolen black Honda Accord. Akinola left his cell phone behind in the original vehicle and changed the license plate on the Honda Accord to a temporary tag in an attempt to avoid detection.
They returned to the gas station where Mr. White was still present. Akinola drove into the parking lot at high speed toward White. Both individuals fired multiple shots at him; White was struck several times and died at the scene. The suspects then fled.
Akinola avoided arrest for several weeks but was taken into custody by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force on July 24, 2023.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the plea alongside Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith. The Metropolitan Police Department led the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua Hall and Natalie Hynum are prosecuting the case.
