A man from Newcomb, New Mexico, has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The incident occurred on November 12, 2024, outside Basha’s grocery store in Shiprock.

Court documents state that Josiah Bodie, 23, who is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, used a knife to attack another man following an argument. Surveillance footage showed Bodie approaching the victim with a knife as the victim tried to leave. Witnesses said Bodie threw the victim against a wall and stabbed him several times.

The victim suffered injuries that required hospitalization for several days. Bodie also received medical treatment for injuries he sustained during the altercation.

Bodie will be subject to three years of supervised release after completing his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Acting Special Agent in Charge Philip Russell of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office announced the sentencing. The investigation was conducted by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Nation Department of Criminal Investigations.
