A man from Poland, Maine was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Portland for committing Social Security fraud. Peter Files, 60, received a sentence of 30 months of probation and was ordered to pay $45,615.78 in restitution. He pleaded guilty on May 8, 2025.

Court records indicate that Files provided false information to the Maine Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) over a period of more than ten years. He repeatedly claimed during benefit eligibility reviews that he and his wife lived separately and did not include her as part of his household. Files admitted during an interview with federal investigators that he had actually lived with his wife throughout the time in question.

Files’ wife, Susie Files, also pleaded guilty to Social Security and SNAP fraud on May 19, 2025. She is scheduled to be sentenced on September 18, 2025.

The investigation was conducted by the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General and the Fraud Investigation and Recovery Unit at Maine DHHS.
