A Mission, South Dakota man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison after pleading guilty to possessing a stolen firearm. U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence to Marlow Poor Thunder, 30, on August 25, 2025.
Poor Thunder received a sentence of three years and 11 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
He was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2025 for Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. On July 28, 2025, he pleaded guilty to Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
Court documents state that on October 24, 2024, Poor Thunder was stopped by a trooper with the South Dakota Highway Patrol while driving a stolen vehicle. At the time of the stop, he had in his possession a firearm that he had stolen earlier that day from another vehicle. Law enforcement seized the firearm during the stop.
The investigation involved multiple agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), South Dakota Highway Patrol, Yankton Police Department, and Sioux Falls Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy Jehangiri prosecuted the case.
Poor Thunder was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
