Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr., U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan | Department of Justice

Turan West, a 30-year-old resident of Saginaw, has been sentenced to 162 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr., who was joined by James Deir, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).

U.S. District Court Judge Thomas L. Ludington delivered the sentence following West's guilty plea to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Court documents indicate that in August 2024, Michigan State Police Troopers stopped a car in Saginaw with West seated as the passenger. When troopers asked the driver to exit the vehicle, West moved into the driver’s seat and attempted to flee while officers tried to stop him. He crashed into an ambulance that had pulled over to assist at the scene. Inside the vehicle, police found a handgun; West has multiple prior felony convictions.

The investigation began with Michigan State Police before being adopted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Assistant United States Attorney William Orr prosecuted the case.
