Preliminary data from an annual survey conducted by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System shows that U.S. portfolio holdings of foreign securities reached approximately $15.8 trillion at year-end 2024. The results were released on August 29, 2025, and are available on the Treasury website (https://home.treasury.gov/data/treasury-international-capital-tic-system/tic-forms-instructions/us-claims-on-foreigners-from-holdings-of-foreign-securities). A final report with further details and possible revisions is scheduled for release on October 31, 2025.

The survey found that out of the total $15.8 trillion in holdings, $12.1 trillion was invested in foreign equities, $3.3 trillion in foreign long-term debt securities (with an original term-to-maturity greater than one year), and $0.4 trillion in foreign short-term debt securities. In comparison, at year-end 2023, U.S. investors held $15.3 trillion in foreign securities: $11.5 trillion in equities, $3.4 trillion in long-term debt securities, and $0.4 trillion in short-term debt.

The countries attracting the most U.S. investment included the Cayman Islands ($2.76 trillion), United Kingdom ($1.63 trillion), Canada ($1.47 trillion), Japan ($1.20 trillion), and Ireland ($1.06 trillion). These figures represent market value as of December 31, 2024.

A separate annual survey measures foreign holdings of U.S. securities; data from this survey covering June 30, 2025 are currently being processed with preliminary results expected on February 27, 2026.

According to the press release: "The survey was undertaken jointly by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System."

Another statement from the release notes: "A complementary survey measuring foreign holdings of U.S. securities also is conducted annually."
