Mustafa Wright, 32, of Washington, D.C., has been indicted on a federal firearms charge following his arrest in Southeast D.C. The indictment was unsealed in U.S. District Court and announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Wright faces one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon. The charge stems from an incident on August 17, 2025, when United States Park Police officers were patrolling near Poplar Point and Anacostia Drive SE. Officers observed Wright driving a vehicle with expired tags and impounded the car after he failed to provide valid registration or insurance. During a routine search of the vehicle, police found a loaded Glock 17 9 mm pistol containing one round in the chamber and 22 rounds in the magazine.

Authorities stated that Wright is barred from possessing firearms or ammunition due to prior felony convictions, including burglary in 2014 and being a felon in possession of a firearm in 2019.

This prosecution is part of the “Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful” initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime in the city by focusing resources on gun violence cases, prioritizing federal firearms violations, seeking tougher penalties for offenders, and pursuing detention for those charged with such crimes.

The case is being investigated by the ATF Washington Field Office and the United States Park Police. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney David B. Liss is handling the prosecution.

“Wright is charged federally with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon.”

“Joining in the announcement were Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Chief Jessica M.E. Taylor of the U.S. Park Police.”

“This prosecution comes as part of the 'Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful' initiative, which is surging resources to reduce violent crime in the District of Columbia. This initiative was created to address gun violence in the District, prioritize federal firearms violations, pursue tougher penalties for offenders, and seek detention for federal firearms violators.”

“An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
