New Orleans man receives over three years for federal firearms offense

Kevin Sturgis, 26, has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance on August 27, 2025. In addition to the prison term, Sturgis will serve three years of supervised release and must pay a $100 special assessment fee.

Court records indicate that on November 23, 2023, officers from the New Orleans Police Department observed Sturgis outside a residence in Hollygrove holding an AR-15 pistol and a handgun while wearing a ski mask and gloves. He was later arrested with a Glock Model 21 .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol loaded with 12 rounds concealed in his waistband. Officers also found an Anderson Manufacturing Model AM-15 multi-caliber semi-automatic pistol loaded with 19 rounds on the porch. Sturgis had prior felony convictions in Orleans Parish before this incident.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crime Unit is prosecuting the case.

"This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results."
