The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed a $60,000 civil penalty against LG Energy Solution, based in Seoul, South Korea. The agency alleges that on January 4, 2024, the company shipped five lithium-ion batteries from Seoul to Los Angeles without proper declaration, packaging, or labeling.

According to the FAA, FedEx personnel discovered the shipment at their sorting facility in Irvine, California after it began emitting heat, smoke, embers, and flames. The incident resulted in one or more of the batteries being charred and melted.

LG Energy Solution has been given 30 days to respond to the FAA’s enforcement letter.
