Cassidy calls for reform after major BLS jobs number revision

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, responded to a recent report revealing that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) overestimated job growth by 911,000 jobs from March 2024 through March 2025. This adjustment marks the largest BLS revision since 2002 and follows previous corrections in May and June where job numbers were reduced by a combined 280,000.

“Jobs reports have always required revisions, but the initial numbers continue to get less and less accurate,” said Dr. Cassidy. “When BLS fails to deliver accurate jobs data, it has serious implications for the economy and families’ pocketbooks. Policymakers are unable to make informed decisions.”

He added, “The status quo is not working. BLS cannot continue to use the same process and expect a different outcome. President Trump made clear he wants to fix BLS so it can deliver accurate, reliable economic data that the American people can trust. This highlights the need for the HELP Committee to work with the administration to fix this problem.”

Last year, Cassidy led Senate Republicans in efforts to hold BLS accountable for what they described as ongoing problems in producing precise national employment statistics.
