This morning in Chicago, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer was seriously injured during an enforcement operation targeting Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, described by officials as a criminal illegal alien with a record of reckless driving. According to authorities, Villegas-Gonzalez resisted arrest, attempted to flee the scene, and dragged the ICE officer a significant distance with his vehicle.
The officer sustained multiple injuries but is reported to be in stable condition. Villegas-Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement not only spread misinformation, but also undermine public safety, as well as the safety of our officers and those being apprehended.”
ICE reports that assaults against its officers have increased by 1000% as they carry out enforcement operations.
Officials stated that ICE officers had conducted a vehicle stop in order to arrest Villegas-Gonzalez. He allegedly refused commands from law enforcement and drove his car toward them. One officer was struck by the car and dragged before firing his weapon out of fear for his life.
Villegas-Gonzalez’s entry date into the United States remains unknown.
