Sean P. Costello U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama
A Marengo County man has been sentenced to more than 13 years in federal prison for the armed robbery of a Chevron gas station in Dixon Mills, Alabama. United States District Court Judge Terry F. Moorer handed down a sentence of 157 months to Yancy Xavier Dumas after he was convicted of robbing a business and discharging a firearm during the crime.
According to court documents, on January 9, 2024, Dumas entered the Chevron Gas Station on Highway 43 wearing a mask and armed with a handgun. He pointed the weapon at the cashier and demanded money, repeatedly telling the victim “give me that bag,” and “I’m going to bust you up.” During the course of the robbery, Dumas fired his gun inside the store to force compliance from the cashier. The victim placed about $5,000 on the counter before Dumas fled with the cash using his girlfriend’s car.
The Marengo County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly to investigate. That same evening, deputies arrested Dumas at another gas station owned by the same proprietor. Authorities recovered approximately $3,700 of stolen money from a shed at Dumas’ mother’s house and found the handgun used in the robbery at his girlfriend’s trailer.
U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello of the Southern District of Alabama announced the sentencing.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Marengo County Sheriff’s Office investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorney George F. May prosecuted it.
The prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative led by the Department of Justice aimed at addressing illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and reducing violent crime through coordinated efforts involving Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
