A Beaumont resident has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison following a carjacking involving a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, according to an announcement from Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs for the Eastern District of Texas.
Jody Lee Bass, 35, pleaded guilty to carjacking and received his sentence from U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone on September 16, 2025.
Court records show that on June 8, 2024, Bass approached a postal worker on Avenue F in Beaumont while the victim was delivering mail. Bass used a knife during the robbery and attempted to stab the mail carrier after grabbing him. The mail carrier managed to escape, and Bass left with the USPS delivery truck before abandoning it nearby. Law enforcement officers later located Bass hiding in the vicinity.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives along with the Beaumont Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney John B. Ross prosecuted the case.
