American Stewards of Liberty highlights House report alleging Green New Deal funding misuse

The American Stewards of Liberty announced on its website that a House Oversight report found billions from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund were awarded to politically connected nonprofits with little oversight, calling it evidence of a "Green New Deal grift."

According to the Oversight Committee report, the Biden Administration earmarked $27 billion for the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) to advance an environmental justice agenda. The report states that $20 billion of this sum was awarded to just eight nonprofits, many with ties to Democratic allies. These figures are presented as evidence that a significant portion of the GGRF’s funding was concentrated among a few organizations rather than being broadly distributed.

The report claims some of these nonprofits saw their assets increase by as much as 2,000,000,000%, highlighting what is described as a massive expansion following the grants. The Oversight Committee alleges that the award process prioritized equity and environmental justice metrics over financial risk, governance, or compliance. Additionally, one organization reportedly had minimal prior capacity or revenue yet received a large grant, raising questions about qualification and oversight.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) new leadership under Administrator Lee Zeldin responded by terminating the grant agreements on March 11, 2025, citing concerns about widespread waste, fraud, and abuse. The EPA has formally referred the GGRF program to its Acting Inspector General and investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and FBI into possible financial mismanagement and conflicts of interest are underway. This sequence of actions is documented in both the Oversight report and posts by the EPA itself.

American Stewards of Liberty (ASL), a nonprofit organization that regularly reports via its Liberty Matters publication on federal environmental initiatives, particularly opposes what it views as overreach under the Biden administration. According to ASL materials, Executive Order 14008—which launched the "30×30" conservation initiative—is seen as unauthorized executive action threatening property rights and productive working lands. ASL frames its mission around defending private land use and opposing policies perceived as favoring conservation at the expense of agriculture, energy, and local decision-making.
