The U.S. Department of Education, in collaboration with the America First Policy Institute (AFPI), Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College, and over 40 other organizations, has launched the America 250 Civics Education Coalition. This initiative aims to promote patriotism and enhance civic knowledge in schools across the United States. Announced on Constitution Day, it aligns with the Trump Administration's plans to commemorate America's 250th anniversary next July.
U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said that the coalition will work to ensure young Americans understand the nation's values and are prepared for informed citizenship. "As America approaches 250 years since its founding, we are proud to announce this coalition to ensure every young American understands the beauty of our nation and is equipped with the civic knowledge required to contribute meaningfully to its future," she said.
Greg Sindelar, Interim President and CEO of AFPI, expressed pride in collaborating with the Department of Education and numerous organizations for this cause. "The sorrowful events of the past week have reminded us how precious our inheritance of liberty truly is — and how easily it can be lost if we do not constantly, faithfully, and strongly defend it," he noted.
Katie Gorka, Executive Director of the coalition, emphasized restoring patriotism through civics education. Erika Donalds and Dr. Ben Judge, co-chairs of the initiative, highlighted its goal to make civics education engaging and accessible. Donalds remarked on the importance of civic knowledge for a free society: "A free society depends on informed citizens, and civic knowledge must once again be at the heart of American education."
Dr. Hutz H. Hertzberg from Turning Point USA reiterated their commitment to advancing virtuous education: "Turning Point USA...is more resolved than ever to advance God-centered, virtuous education for students flourishing across our nation." Meanwhile, Dr. Larry Arnn from Hillsdale College spoke about learning from historical principles: "We celebrate Lincoln for his greatness in recalling the nation to the principles of its birth."
The coalition held its first roundtable discussion today and plans a year-long agenda featuring events like a college speaker series and a nationwide speaking tour.
