Mexican national pleads guilty in Florida alien smuggling case

A Mexican national, Yuridia Rosas-Luna, has pleaded guilty to charges related to transporting undocumented immigrants for financial gain, according to an announcement from United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe. Rosas-Luna, 35, faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. The date for sentencing has not yet been set.

Court records show that on May 21, 2024, a deputy with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office stopped Rosas-Luna’s vehicle due to reckless driving. Inside the car were three passengers. Neither Rosas-Luna nor her passengers could provide identification when asked by law enforcement. Deputies conducted a search and found Mexican identification cards on all three passengers.

Rosas-Luna initially told deputies she was taking one passenger to visit family but later said she had picked up a friend in Nassau County to take him to a hospital in Tampa. She also acknowledged knowing the passengers were from Mexico.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents determined that all three passengers were Mexican citizens present illegally in the United States. One passenger had been removed from the U.S. and returned to Mexico just eight days before the traffic stop.

During questioning, Rosas-Luna admitted she was supposed to receive $1,500 for transporting one of the individuals from Kingsland, Georgia, to Riverview, Florida.

The investigation involved U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorneys Elisibeth Adams and Ashley Washington are prosecuting the case.
