Sprout Organics has expanded its voluntary recall of Sweet Potato Apple and Spinach pouches due to concerns over potentially elevated lead levels. The recall, initially announced on September 16, 2025, now includes additional lot codes.
The company stated that exposure to lead can increase blood lead levels, especially in children. "Additional signs and symptoms of lead exposure are more likely with acute exposure to higher levels of lead or chronic exposure to lead. The effects of lead depend upon the amount and duration of exposure and age/body weight. If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time, this can affect learning and development or cause other long-term health problems."
The affected product is a 3.5-ounce pouch sold at Walgreens stores and independent retailers in several states including Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming. It was not distributed through any other large retail chains besides Walgreens.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled product are advised to return it to their local store for a full refund. The expiration date and lot code can be found on the bottom strip on the back of each pouch.
No illnesses related to the recalled products have been reported so far. Other Sprout Organics products are not affected by this recall. The action follows routine sampling procedures.
