Sioux Falls man sentenced for illegal firearm possession

Alison J. Ramsdell U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of South Dakota

A Sioux Falls man has been sentenced to over two years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm. U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence to Dustin Douglas Wade Deverney Hubbeling, 24, on September 22, 2025.

Hubbeling received a sentence of two years and two months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

According to court records, Hubbeling was indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2024 for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person and pleaded guilty on June 26, 2025. The charge stemmed from an incident on December 5, 2024, when officers with the Sioux Falls Police Department found him carrying a pistol in his waistband. At the time, Hubbeling was not allowed to possess firearms due to three prior felony convictions.

"This case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Sioux Falls Police Department," said U.S. Attorney Ramsdell. "Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Joyce prosecuted the case."

After sentencing, Hubbeling was immediately remanded into custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
