Leah B. Foley United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts | Department of Justice

A Honduran national living in Waltham, Massachusetts, was sentenced in federal court for illegally reentering the United States after being deported. Samuel Cruz Alvarado, 63, received a sentence of time served—equivalent to three and a half months—from U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns. Following his sentencing, Cruz Alvarado will face deportation proceedings.

Cruz Alvarado had pleaded guilty in August 2025 to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. He was arrested on May 5, 2025, and indicted by a federal grand jury the following month.

According to court records, Cruz Alvarado had previously been deported from the United States twice, most recently on November 26, 2012. After that removal, he returned to the country without legal authorization.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Acting Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston announced the sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Allegra Flamm from the Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.
