A woman from Dayton, Oregon, has been sentenced to 25 months in federal prison for embezzling more than $1.7 million from the Department of Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Cheryl Elizabeth Campos, 62, was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release following her prison term.

Court documents show that between January 2022 and June 2024, Campos used her role as Quartermaster of the VFW to access the organization’s bank accounts and transfer large sums into her personal accounts. She concealed these actions by falsifying financial documents, bank statements, and accounting records.

Campos spent the stolen funds on hundreds of crystals, semi-precious rocks, marbles, stones, statues, as well as personal expenses such as credit card payments and purchasing a vehicle for a family member.

She was charged with wire fraud on March 24, 2025. Campos pleaded guilty to wire fraud on April 15, 2025.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Robert S. Trisotto, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.
