Sean P. Costello U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama

A Mobile man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. According to court documents, on August 18, 2024, officers from the Mobile Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at a local hotel. Reginald Thompson, age 50, had fired several rounds into the bathroom wall of his hotel room, claiming that someone was attempting to break in. However, surveillance footage indicated that no one was near Thompson's room prior to law enforcement’s arrival.

Thompson admitted he possessed the firearm. He has multiple prior felony convictions and is legally prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.

Upon completion of his prison sentence, Thompson will serve three years under supervised release and is required to pay a $100 special assessment.

U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello for the Southern District of Alabama announced the sentencing. The case was investigated by the Mobile Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tandice H. Blackwood prosecuted the case.

The prosecution falls under Operation Take Back America, which coordinates resources across the Department of Justice with aims including combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protecting communities from violent crime. This initiative brings together efforts from programs such as the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
