As the federal government faces a potential shutdown, the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) is urging the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to maintain essential aerospace and defense operations. Eric Fanning, AIA President and CEO, addressed his concerns in a letter to OMB Director Russell Vought.

Fanning requested that OMB exempt key functions and personnel vital to national and economic security from any shutdown impacts. He emphasized the importance of continuing real-world missions such as air traffic control, aircraft certification, defense contract management, and spaceflight safety.

“Even when there is a lapse in government funding, many government activities performed in partnership with our industry remain vital for public safety, national security, and the protection of property,” Fanning wrote. “Government shutdowns only [make] it more difficult for our industry to manage and recruit effectively and provide the highest quality equipment and services to government agencies. We seek your help in minimizing this damage as much as possible.”

The letter also provided specific recommendations for various agencies—including the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA, Department of War, and Homeland Security—highlighting which roles should continue during a shutdown to prevent significant disruptions affecting citizens, the economy, and military operations.

AIA’s communication comes at a time when uncertainty about federal funding could impact sectors crucial to U.S. infrastructure and defense capabilities.
