The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has expressed its support for the Energy Choice Act, also known as H.R. 3699. This legislation aims to prevent state and local governments from imposing bans on energy services based on their type or source. The NFIB sent a letter to the U.S. House of Representatives advocating for this bill, emphasizing its potential to lower energy costs and offer small businesses more options in selecting energy providers.
Louis Bertolotti, Principal of Federal Government Relations at NFIB, highlighted the significance of energy costs for small businesses. "The cost of energy remains a top issue impacting our nation’s small businesses," he said. He further explained that various states and municipalities have implemented restrictions favoring certain energy sources, which has limited access to affordable and reliable energy. According to Bertolotti, this legislation could help prevent such mandates from negatively affecting small businesses and local economies, especially as electricity demands continue to rise.
In a recent survey conducted by NFIB titled "Problems & Priorities," small business owners ranked the cost of natural gas, propane, gasoline, diesel, and fuel oil as their sixth most pressing concern. Electricity costs were ranked tenth overall in terms of operating concerns.
