Foodynamics has announced a voluntary recall of certain lots of its Raw Dog Barkery, BellePepper Cats, and Kanu Pets brand freeze-dried pet treats due to potential Salmonella contamination. The company said the recall was initiated after sampling by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected the presence of Salmonella in these products.
According to Foodynamics, Salmonella can affect both animals that consume the contaminated treats and humans who handle them. People infected with Salmonella may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, more severe conditions like arterial infections or endocarditis may occur. The company advises consumers who develop symptoms after contact with these products to seek medical attention.
Pets infected with Salmonella may show signs including lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Some pets may carry the bacteria without appearing ill but can still spread it to other animals or humans. Pet owners whose animals have consumed recalled treats and exhibit these symptoms are urged to consult a veterinarian.
The affected products were distributed from Wisconsin via UPS to retailers in Wisconsin, New York, and Florida. Seven packages in total were shipped to consumers in these states. Specific Raw Dog Barkery products were sold at SimplyDried Treats, Magpies Gourmet Dog Treats, and What’s In the Bowl Delafield in Wisconsin; BellePepper Cats products were sold by a retailer in New York; and Kanu Pets products were sold by a retailer in Florida.
Foodynamics reported that it traced all distributed packages within hours of initiating the recall notice and has contacted all direct customers. No illnesses have been reported so far among pets or people.
"The recall is the result of FDA sampling which revealed the presence of Salmonella," Foodynamics stated. "Foodynamics has ceased the production and distribution of the product while it works with the FDA to continue its investigation into what caused the problem."
Retailers have been instructed to examine their inventory for affected lots and quarantine any recalled items. They will receive refunds for returned products. Consumers are advised not to feed recalled treats to pets or other animals and should return them for a full refund at their place of purchase.
Foodynamics recommends disposing of recalled items so they cannot be accessed by children or animals and cleaning any surfaces or utensils that came into contact with them. For questions about this recall, consumers can contact Teresa Perry at info@foodynamics.com or call (262) 421-5339 during business hours.
