The Stimson Center has announced the appointment of Andrew Oros as its new Senior Fellow and Director of the Japan Program. Oros will succeed Yuki Tatsumi, the longtime director, and is expected to bring new insights to US-Japan relations and regional policy discussions.
Oros has a background in Japanese domestic politics, foreign policy, demographic change, and national security. He is a Professor of Political Science and International Studies at Washington College, where he leads an interdisciplinary undergraduate program. His experience includes fellowships at the Wilson Center, the East-West Center in Washington, DC, and academic institutions in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and mainland China.
His latest book, "Asia’s Aging Security" (2025), explores the impact of demographic shifts on security in the Indo-Pacific. This focus on demographic change is central to his approach at Stimson.
Under Oros’s leadership, the Japan Program will emphasize Japan’s changing role as a regional and global leader. The program aims to enhance communication between Washington and Tokyo and continue to provide analysis for policymakers and the private sector. There are also plans to expand collaboration with Japanese experts and officials to address new geopolitical and technological challenges.
“I’m excited to join Stimson at a time when Japan’s role in regional and global affairs is expanding in new and significant ways,” said Oros. “My goal is to deepen understanding of Japan’s domestic and global contributions, and Stimson’s collaborative, policy-oriented environment is exactly the place to do that.”
“Andrew’s arrival to Stimson marks a new era in our Japan programming,” said Brian Finlay, President and CEO of the Stimson Center. “His broad perspective and unique insights on Japan open an array of new issues that will leverage Stimson’s world class research on the Indo-Pacific. His leadership will continue to build on the program’s remarkable legacy while also recognizing the role of Japan as a global actor. I could not be more pleased to welcome Andrew aboard.”
