Cleanup efforts continue in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, following a fire at Smitty’s Supply, Inc. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on October 15 that it plans to transition cleanup responsibilities to Smitty’s Supply and the state of Louisiana through a consent order and a Pollution Removal Funding Authorization.
The EPA will maintain oversight of the operations linked to the fire that began on August 22, 2025. So far, efforts have led to the recovery of over 7 million gallons of liquid waste and the removal of more than 11 million gallons for disposal. Additionally, containment measures include laying 22,400 feet of boom and deploying nearly 5,000 bales of sorbent material.
Smitty’s Supply is now handling cleanup operations under EPA supervision. The company submits work plans for EPA approval before proceeding with any tasks. Recent activities included decontaminating frac tanks used for rainwater collection and sampling local water bodies to assess pollution levels.
Community engagement remains a priority for the EPA, which has met with over 2,380 residents since September 12. The agency also continues door-to-door interactions and participates in local events like Vintage Market Days in Southeast Louisiana.
