AquaStar (USA) Corp, based in Seattle, Washington, has issued a voluntary recall of a limited quantity of frozen shrimp imported from Indonesia. The company cited concerns that the shrimp may have been prepared, packed, or stored in conditions where they could have been exposed to very low levels of cesium-137 (Cs-137).
The company emphasized that none of the products listed or referenced tested positive for Cs-137. According to AquaStar, "No illnesses have been reported to date and this recall is only being issued out of a preponderance of caution."
The recall was initiated with the awareness of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Consumers who purchased the affected shrimp are advised not to consume the product and are encouraged to dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Cs-137 is described as a man-made radioisotope of cesium. The company noted that traces of Cs-137 are found widely in the environment at background levels and can be present at higher concentrations in water or foods from areas with environmental contamination.
Consumers with questions about the recall can contact AquaStar at 1-800-331-3440.
