U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued a statement after meeting with Andrew T. Duva, President Trump’s nominee for Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division.

Durbin expressed concern about the current administration's approach to the rule of law and its impact on the Department of Justice. “This Administration shows no willingness to abide by the rule of law. As DOJ leadership exhibits no remorse for weaponizing our justice system, the American people are louder than ever in demanding a Justice Department that puts the Constitution before any president,” Durbin said.

He also criticized actions taken by President Trump in Illinois and raised questions about federal resources allocated to public safety efforts, specifically referencing the Criminal Division within DOJ. “As President Trump continues to wreak havoc on my home state with illegal scare tactics, his Administration is gutting resources meant to keep us safe—including from the Criminal Division. I suspect Mr. Duva will be presented with choices that put the President’s wishes at odds with what is best for our country and its safety. We need appointees willing to say ‘no’ to unlawful directives,” Durbin stated.

Durbin concluded by saying, “I look forward to hearing more from Mr. Duva at his hearing.”
