Peterson Company recalls Twin Sisters Creamery cheeses over E. coli concerns

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Dr. Marty Makary, Commissioner of Food and Drugs Administration | FDA

Peterson Company, based in Auburn, Washington, has announced a voluntary recall of certain Twin Sisters Creamery cheese products due to potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and E. coli O103. The affected products include item #28855 Whatcom Blue and item #29608 Farmhouse Cheese, both made from raw milk.

According to the company, these cheeses were distributed to retailers, caterers, distributors, and restaurants in Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington between August 14 and October 24, 2025. The recalled cheeses are packaged as roughly 5oz-6oz half-moon shaped pieces in clear plastic wrap. Manufacturer codes on the affected items include:

- Whatcom Blue: MFG Codes 793511, 781511, 775511, 761511

- Farmhouse: MFG Codes 765511, 752511, 738511, 726511

The recall follows notification from Twin Sisters Creamery after third-party lab testing confirmed the presence of E. coli O103 in a sample of Farmhouse Cheese and detection of STEC in Whatcom Blue samples by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Peterson Company stated that "there have been three reports of STEC infections caused by E. coli O103 in OR and WA to date. The case in Oregon consumed the Twin Sisters Creamery Farmhouse cheese prior to becoming ill." They added that "these illnesses are not associated with consumption of cheese items that were re-packaged by Peterson Company."

E. coli O103 can cause severe abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea, vomiting and may lead to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a potentially life-threatening condition especially for young children or those with weakened immune systems.

Consumers who still have any recalled product are advised not to eat it but instead throw it away and clean any surfaces it may have touched. Refunds are available at the place of purchase.

Questions can be directed to Twin Sisters Creamery at 360-656-5240 Tuesday through Saturday from 11am–5pm PT or Peterson Company at (800) 735-0313 X2101.

"This recall is being made with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration," according to Peterson Company.
