SiluetaYa has issued a recall for its tejocote root product after analysis by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that the product appears to be Thevetia peruviana, commonly known as yellow oleander. Yellow oleander is known to contain cardiac glycosides in all parts of the plant, which are highly toxic to both humans and animals. Consumption of this plant can result in serious or potentially fatal neurological, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular health effects. Reported symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, changes in heart rhythm, and arrhythmia.
The recalled tejocote root was distributed online and is sold in 8-ounce containers. As of now, no illnesses have been reported related to this product.
The recall follows FDA sampling that identified the presence of yellow oleander instead of tejocote root in the product.
Consumers who purchased SiluetaYa’s tejocote root are advised not to consume it and should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. For further questions, consumers can contact SiluetaYa at contacto@siluetaya.com Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Eastern Time.
More information can be found in the FDA advisory.
