Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Cuban activist José Daniel Ferrer after Ferrer's arrival in the United States from Cuba, according to a statement by Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott.
During their conversation, Secretary Rubio expressed respect for Ferrer's efforts and determination despite what he described as "the Cuban regime’s oppression, threats to his life, and brutal treatment of him and his family." The discussion also addressed the impact of Hurricane Melissa on eastern Cuba. Ferrer highlighted the need for U.S. assistance to be delivered directly to Cubans through partnerships with organizations like the Catholic Church, rather than through the Cuban government.
Rubio reiterated that the United States is committed to supporting democracy, prosperity, and basic freedoms for people in Cuba. He stated that advocacy by Ferrer and other dissidents is important for advancing pro-democracy efforts on the island. Rubio also pledged continued support from the U.S. for promoting accountability regarding human rights abuses by the Cuban government.
