Secretary Kristi Noem has authorized the Department of Homeland Security to expedite $1 million in up-front funding from FEMA to assist Alaska with recovery efforts following Typhoon Halong, which struck in early October.
According to Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, “Under President Trump and Secretary Noem’s leadership, FEMA is moving at an unprecedented speed to provide Alaska with immediate support that it needs to recover from this tragedy. Disasters are best managed when they’re state managed, locally executed, and federally supported. From FEMA’s on-the-ground efforts to the U.S. Coast Guard’s successful rescue operations, DHS is ensuring that Alaskans are getting the help they need.”
The expedited funding will be used for stabilizing hazardous conditions and supporting community safety by enabling temporary repairs to critical infrastructure or utilities and staffing emergency operations centers. Additional recovery funds are expected in the future.
FEMA has deployed 147 staff members to Bothell and Anchorage as of November 3 to assist with disaster relief operations. The U.S. Coast Guard played a key role immediately after the flooding by rescuing 34 people and evacuating another 28 individuals from a temporary shelter. Coast Guard air crews conducted aerial searches over 8.5 hours, covering a total area of 88 square miles.
FEMA’s Public Assistance program provides reimbursement for eligible debris removal, emergency protective measures, and permanent work for states, tribes, and local governments. FEMA will continue offering technical assistance and oversight throughout Alaska's recovery process.
Survivors affected by Typhoon Halong can seek FEMA assistance by calling (866) 342-1699, visiting a Disaster Assistance Center, or applying online.
