U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, recently led a committee hearing focused on helping veterans achieve long-term success after their military service. The session included testimony from representatives of several organizations: the George W. Bush Institute, Combined Arms, D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, Student Veterans of America, Hiring Our Heroes at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, and Yale University.
During the hearing, Senator Moran emphasized the value veterans bring to society. “Each veteran is a significant asset to our country, hugely important to their families and the communities in which they live and ultimately, to the nation,” said Sen. Moran. “They demonstrated that in their service. What has arisen over a period of time in our country is often other veterans, but certainly other citizens, who rise to the occasion to make certain that veterans’ needs are being met. I want to thank those that are doing that every day, including individuals and organizations in Kansas and across the country.”
This discussion followed an earlier committee meeting where members heard from veterans themselves as well as advocates, the VA Inspector General, and officials from the Government Accountability Office about ways to improve the Department of Veterans Affairs disability benefits system and how best to support meaningful post-service lives for veterans.
