The Senate Judiciary Committee has unanimously approved the Holocaust Expropriated Art Recovery Act of 2025. The legislation, led by Senators John Cornyn and Richard Blumenthal, aims to assist Holocaust survivors in reclaiming artwork taken from them. According to the committee, the bill is designed to ensure that cases involving stolen art are decided based on their merits rather than being dismissed due to procedural technicalities.
Chairman Chuck Grassley is a cosponsor of the bipartisan measure. "The bipartisan bill would help reunite Holocaust survivors with their stolen artwork by ensuring that their cases are adjudicated on the merits and procedural loopholes don’t stand in the way of justice," according to the committee's statement.
In addition to advancing this legislation, the committee voted 13-9 in favor of Thomas Ferguson III’s nomination for U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
