Former Philadelphia deputy sheriff pleads guilty to $145K bank fraud scheme

A former Philadelphia Deputy Sheriff, Darryl T. Wells, pleaded guilty to bank fraud on Tuesday in federal court. United States Attorney David Metcalf announced the plea, which took place before United States District Judge Joel H. Slomsky.

Wells, 34, was charged by indictment earlier this year. According to court filings and admissions made by Wells, he submitted eight fraudulent loan and credit applications between December 2018 and January 2019 while employed as a Deputy Sheriff Officer with the City of Philadelphia. In these applications, he significantly overstated his monthly income and sometimes attached forged paystubs.

Prosecutors stated that Wells obtained $145,000 through these false applications. He spent or transferred all of the funds immediately after receiving them and did not repay the financial institutions involved.

Wells is scheduled for sentencing on March 3. He could face up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $1 million.

The case was investigated by the FBI and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Samuel Dalke.
