Adair County man pleads guilty to federal firearm possession charge

An Adair County resident has pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Jeremy Lee Poafpybitty, 40, from Bunch, Oklahoma, admitted guilt to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. This charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Prosecutors stated that on May 6, 2025, Poafpybitty was found with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol despite having a prior conviction for an offense punishable by more than one year in prison. The incident took place in Cherokee County within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation Reservation.

The investigation involved multiple agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Cherokee Nation Marshals Service, and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Gerald L. Jackson accepted Poafpybitty’s plea and ordered a presentence investigation report. Sentencing will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge after reviewing federal guidelines and statutory considerations.

Poafpybitty is being held by the United States Marshals Service until sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Conway prosecuted the case.
