House Oversight Committee subpoenas banks in ongoing Jeffrey Epstein investigation

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, led by Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), has issued subpoenas to J.P. Morgan and Deutsche Bank for financial records related to Jeffrey Epstein. The committee is also seeking documents from U.S. Virgin Islands Attorney General Gordon Rhea as part of its ongoing review into the federal government’s investigation of Epstein.

According to the committee, it aims to provide "accountability and transparency to the American people and the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s horrific crimes." As part of this effort, the committee has released about 65,000 pages of documents so far. These include materials from the Department of Justice, the Epstein Estate, deposition transcripts from former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr, and former Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta.

On August 5, 2025, Chairman Comer subpoenaed the Department of Justice for all documents and communications related to Epstein and Maxwell. The DOJ has since produced approximately 33,000 pages of records that have been made available on the committee’s website.

Chairman Comer has also issued deposition subpoenas to several high-profile individuals including Bill and Hillary Clinton; former FBI Directors James Comey and Robert Mueller; and former Attorneys General Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, Merrick Garland, William Barr, Jeff Sessions, and Alberto Gonzales. The committee stated that it will make deposition transcripts public.

The committee conducted a deposition with William Barr and released the transcript. According to the committee: "Barr debunked the Democrats’ false claims about President Trump." Additionally: "The Committee has accepted formal written declarations from former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorneys General Alberto Gonzelez, Eric Holder, Loretta Lynch, Jeff Sessions, and Merrick Garland under penalty of prosecution for false statements stating they possess no information about the Epstein or Maxwell cases." The subpoena for Robert Mueller was withdrawn due to health issues preventing his testimony.

Negotiations are ongoing with attorneys for Bill and Hillary Clinton regarding dates for their depositions.

Alexander Acosta appeared voluntarily for a transcribed interview on September 19, 2025. The committee stated: "Mr. Acosta destroyed the Democrats’ Trump-Epstein smear. There was no contact between President Trump and former U.S. Attorney Acosta, and no link between Trump and Epstein in the case."

Other actions taken by Chairman Comer include a subpoena issued on August 25, 2025 to the Epstein estate for unredacted documents; a July 23 subpoena to Ghislaine Maxwell for a deposition; as well as requests made to the U.S. Department of Treasury for suspicious activity reports related to sex trafficking investigations involving Epstein and Maxwell. The Treasury Department is cooperating fully with these requests.
