Rossiter man sentenced to over eight years for throwing explosive at wife's home

A man from Rossiter, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 97 months in federal prison for possessing a destructive device. The sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release. The announcement was made by First Assistant United States Attorney Troy Rivetti.

Roam L. Beer, age 51, received the sentence from Senior United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer. Beer was convicted after a jury trial held on August 7, 2025. Evidence presented at trial showed that on January 5, 2024, Beer threw an ignited homemade explosive device containing steel shot at the residence of his estranged wife. She was inside the room adjacent to where the device struck but was not injured.

Assistant United States Attorney Shaun E. Sweeney prosecuted the case.

Before announcing the sentence, Judge Fischer commented on Beer's criminal record and escalation of behavior: “moved from threats to making bombs,” and described Beer's actions as “a very dangerous act warranting a serious penalty.”

First Assistant United States Attorney Rivetti recognized the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and New Kensington Police Department for their roles in investigating and prosecuting Beer.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which brings together law enforcement agencies and communities to address violent crime and gun violence. In May 2021, the Department introduced a strategy aimed at reducing violent crime through building trust in communities, supporting organizations focused on prevention, setting targeted enforcement priorities, and evaluating results.
