A Lewiston resident, Kulmiye Abukar Idris, 35, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence will be served consecutively to his current 42-month state prison term for gross sexual assault. After completing both sentences, Idris will be on supervised release for three years.

The sentencing took place on November 18 at the U.S. District Court in Portland, with Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. presiding. According to court records, police officers in Lewiston stopped Idris's vehicle in January 2025 due to traffic violations and found a handgun during their search. Idris was previously convicted of gross sexual assault in Androscoggin County in 2024, making it illegal for him to possess firearms.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Lewiston Police Department, with assistance from the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office.
