Sioux City man receives over 15 years for distributing meth near school

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

Jon Waugh, a 55-year-old resident of Sioux City, Iowa, has been sentenced to 188 months in federal prison for possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it near a protected location. The sentencing took place on November 17, 2025, following Waugh’s guilty plea in June.

Waugh was arrested by police on August 14, 2024, outside his apartment. During the arrest, officers found approximately 112 grams of methamphetamine and $854 in cash on him. A subsequent search of his residence led to the discovery of over one kilogram of pure methamphetamine, a scale with meth residue, drug paraphernalia, and four firearms—one of which had been reported stolen. At his plea hearing, Waugh admitted that he intended to distribute the methamphetamine to others in Sioux City. His home was located within 1,000 feet of an elementary school.

The case was presided over by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand. In addition to his prison sentence, Waugh will be required to serve ten years of supervised release after completing his term. Federal law does not allow parole. Waugh is currently being held by the United States Marshal while awaiting transfer to a federal facility.
