Samuel Alexander Gray, a 53-year-old resident of Leesville, has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to operating a dogfighting venture and possessing firearms as a convicted felon.
Authorities began investigating Gray in September 2023 after the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Animal Services responded to a citizen complaint about animals on his rural property. Investigators discovered a large fight pit with a carpeted floor stained with blood and surrounded by lawn chairs for spectators. They also found dog training equipment and a rule book related to dogfighting.
Multiple dogs were located on the property, many wearing heavy chains with weighted collars—a method used to strengthen their necks. Several dogs had injuries and scars consistent with participation in fights. Investigators noted the absence of food or clean water nearby, and found several animal carcasses and skulls. In total, 14 dogs were seized from the property.
Gray was also found in possession of six firearms and 400 rounds of ammunition despite being prohibited from owning them due to previous felony convictions.
“Gray’s cruel and illegal dogfighting operation trapped these helpless dogs in a living nightmare,” said Bryan Stirling, U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina. “We will continue to prosecute those who torture and harm vulnerable animals for entertainment and profit. Thank you to our partners at the FBI and Lexington County for their work on this case.”
United States District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis sentenced Gray to 15 months imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release. Under the terms of his supervision, he is barred from owning any dogs. There is no parole in the federal system.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI Columbia Field Office along with Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Animal Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elle Klein is prosecuting the case.
