Malik Kearney, a 20-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for his involvement in two separate carjackings that took place within one week in Northeast Washington. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Kearney pleaded guilty on June 23, 2025, to charges including carjacking and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence related to incidents on December 28, 2024, and January 3, 2025.

On November 18, Judge Andrea Hertzfeld handed down the sentence. Kearney’s co-defendant, Erick Alvarenga, received an identical sentence of 14 years on August 29, 2025. Both men were also ordered to serve three years of supervised release after their incarceration.

According to court documents, the first carjacking occurred early in the morning on December 28 when the victim was sitting in a Jeep SUV parked on Eastern Avenue NE. Kearney and Alvarenga approached the vehicle; one was armed with a black handgun. They ordered the victim out of the car and took the keys before driving away in the stolen Jeep.

The second incident happened several days later at a gas station on Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue NE. Alvarenga used the previously stolen Jeep to block another vehicle while Kearney approached with a handgun and demanded that victim exit his Dodge sedan. After complying, both suspects drove off with both vehicles.

Both men were arrested on January 3, shortly after the second offense and have remained detained since then.

U.S. Attorney Pirro stated: “In announcing the sentence,” she said she commended those who investigated from the Metropolitan Police Department and acknowledged Assistant United States Attorneys Randle Wilson and Amanda Claire Hoover for prosecuting the case.

Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department joined Pirro in making this announcement.
