A federal inmate at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County, Florida, has been indicted on charges of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and possession of contraband. The United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the arrest of Billy Boortz, 43, from Duval County, Texas.
According to the indictment, on July 18, 2025, Boortz was found in possession of five grams or more of methamphetamine while incarcerated at the federal facility. The substance is classified as a prohibited object within federal prisons.
If convicted on the drug distribution charge, Boortz faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to forty years in prison. The contraband offense carries a potential sentence of up to twenty years.
"An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty," stated officials.
The case is under investigation by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson is prosecuting.
