Gerard Carr, a 27-year-old resident of New Orleans, pleaded guilty on September 30, 2025, to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The plea was entered before U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan. Carr's conviction falls under Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8).
Court documents state that in April 2025, Carr was involved in a shootout outside a convenience store on North Galvez Street in New Orleans. One week after the incident, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at a residence linked to Carr and recovered the firearm used during the shootout.
Carr has several prior felony convictions in Orleans Parish. These include conspiracy to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute heroin, conspiracy to possess a firearm while possessing a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm while possessing a controlled dangerous substance, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and illegally possessing a stolen firearm.
He now faces up to 15 years in prison, up to $250,000 in fines, up to three years of supervised release, and must pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America. According to the press release: "Operation Take Back America is a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN)."
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman from the Violent Crime Unit is prosecuting this case.
