President Donald J. Trump has signed an Executive Order to establish The Genesis Mission, a national initiative aimed at using artificial intelligence (AI) to speed up scientific discovery. The program draws inspiration from the Apollo Program and will bring together the computational resources of National Laboratories with leading scientists to change how research is done in the United States.
The Genesis Mission involves a coordinated effort across the federal government. The Department of Energy will play a central role by integrating its supercomputers and datasets into a unified AI platform. This integration is expected to allow AI systems to automate experiment design, run faster simulations, and create predictive models that increase productivity in federal research and development.
The Executive Order assigns the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology with leading coordination among agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and National Institutes of Health (NIH). These agencies are expected to use AI tools on data from fields like energy, health, and manufacturing.
