Honduran man charged with illegal reentry in New Orleans

A Honduran national, Jose Luis Paz-Bonilla, 47, has been charged with illegal reentry into the United States after previously being removed. The charge was filed by bill of information on November 21, 2025, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

The indictment alleges that Paz-Bonilla reentered the country around November 3, 2025, after having been deported on or about September 21, 2000.

If convicted, Paz-Bonilla could face up to two years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, up to three years of supervised release following imprisonment, and a mandatory special assessment of $100.

Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson stated: "A bill of information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt."

Simpson commended the United States Border Patrol for its investigative work in this case. Assistant United States Attorney Irene González is leading the prosecution.

This prosecution falls under Operation Take Back America, an initiative designed to use Department of Justice resources against illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations. The operation coordinates efforts from programs such as the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).
