On December 2, 2025, the White House marked the anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine with a statement from President Donald J. Trump. The message reaffirmed the United States' commitment to national sovereignty and introduced what was described as a “Trump Corollary” to the original doctrine.
The Monroe Doctrine, first articulated by President James Monroe in 1823, asserted that the American continents should be free from future colonization by European powers and established U.S. leadership in the Western Hemisphere. In his message, President Trump quoted Monroe: “The American continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers.” He added that these words signaled America’s emergence as a global power.
President Trump stated: “Today, my Administration proudly reaffirms this promise under a new ‘Trump Corollary’ to the Monroe Doctrine: That the American people—not foreign nations nor globalist institutions—will always control their own destiny in our hemisphere.”
He highlighted actions taken during his administration such as restoring U.S. privileged access through the Panama Canal, reestablishing maritime dominance, and addressing non-market practices in international supply chains and logistics sectors.
Other initiatives mentioned included efforts to stop drug trafficking through Mexico, end illegal immigration at the southern border, dismantle narco-terrorist networks across the region, and secure trade agreements with El Salvador, Argentina, Ecuador, and Guatemala.
President Trump concluded: “Today, we renew our pledge to always uphold American sovereignty, security, and safety first. Above all, we vow to protect our cherished national legacy of republican self-government against all threats, foreign and domestic.”
